Aerospace Education Partners

Return to Aerospace Education Menu

AIAA – American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) offers and sponsors a wealth of resources to support educators at both the university level and K-12: publications and online tools, classroom grants, Educator Associate Program, and informative aerospace links. AIAA is a member of NCAE as well. Lisa Bacon (their education manager) and Ann Sagle work regularly on cross promoting scholarships, grants and conferences. This year, AIAA was unable to attend NSTA and AFA offered to provide a handout about their educator programs at our booth. Lisa also serves as a judge for several of our grants and scholarships. This year AFA is a sponsor of their Inside Aerospace Forum in May. As part of their Foundation Educator Achievement Award, Ann Sagle will be participating in most of the events as an invited guest. This is a no cost partnership.

Careers in Aviation – Careers in Aviation advances aerospace education and employment by fostering scholarships, by connecting students with available assistance, and by encouraging the aviation industry, professional associations, government agencies, and the educational community to work together effectively supporting aviation and space career development programs. Judy Rice, a former AEF board member and former head of CAP education, is the current Executive Director. CIA provides AFA with judges and cross promotes AFA programs. There is no cost to AFA.

Civil Air Patrol – The aerospace education division of CAP delivers quality education products and programs to help promote aviation and space to the general public and creates awareness of the importance of aerospace in our lives and the future of America. AFA and CAP have been partners for over 10 years. AFA offers a total of $10,000 in grants each year to CAP Squadrons and CAP Aerospace Education Members (teacher membership category) CAP provides judges to AFA and promotes all of our educational opportunities to their members via their website and targeted emails. CAP is also a member of NCAE.

FAA – another member of NCAE who provides us with the judges and promotional opportunities through their regional aviation education outreach program at no cost.

Global Space Travelers – is a local organization run by Lonnie Schorer. Global Space Travelers provides educational resources to teachers through its publications. Lonnie is a member of NCAE and has served as a judge for our Spouse Scholarship.

National Coalition on Aviation (NCAE) – Sponsors of NCASE (National Conference on Aviation Education) and LCAE (Leadership Conference on Aviation Education), the National Coalition for Aviation Education represents government, industry, and labor; united to promote aviation education activities and resources and increasing public understanding of aviation. NCAE provides the tentacles into over 50 peer organizations for STEM initiatives and gives resources to leaders and educators and supports educational initiatives at the local, state, and national levels. NCAE meet's quarterly to discuss ways to promote aerospace activities. The annual cost is $300 based on the size of our organization (50+ employees).

In the past, AFA has been a sponsor of NCASE 2004, 2006, and 2008. NCASE was formerly a CAP-sponsored event, but in 2004 transferred ownership to NCAE. This conference in held every other year. The 2008 cost of sponsorship was $2000 which included an exhibit booth space and one workshop.

AFA has not been a sponsor of LCASE either in 2005 or 2007. LCASE is held in the off-NCASE years. AFA does provide to LCASE, administrative support (Ann Sagle) and some small in-kind services such as reproduction costs of less than $500. Buck Buckwalter attended LCASE in 2007; LCASE for 2009 has been cancelled.

Ann Sagle attends the quarterly meetings at AF HQ and serves as the organizational representative. NCAE is a source of judges, cross promotional opportunities and resource sharing.

National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) – AFA has attended every annual conference since 2004. Total cost for exhibit space, travel for one staff member and Freeman’s services in setting up the booth is approximately $7000. About 8,000 teachers attend NSTA each year, and in past years, over 2,000 teachers have visited the AFA booth. This year the event was smaller due to the economy. National, State, and Chapter Teachers of the Year, chapter members, former AEF Board members and several AFA partners were also in attendance. This year we had just over 500 visit the booth. As part of the booth package, we receive all the names and contact information for all booth visitors. Ann Sagle also makes contacts with other organizations to develop partnerships, cross promote products and services, and recruit judges for our various grants and scholarships. This year, we also co-presented an aerospace education workshop with USA TODAY (who kindly paid the $1000 fee for the workshop).

Space Explorers – Space Explorers’ virtual missions, experiments, and data analysis tools were founded upon the idea that students involved in the excitement of NASA missions could be highly motivated to pursue careers in math, science, and technology fields. Along with providing Internet-based science curricula, Space Explorers also provides teachers with professional development opportunities and workshops to further enhance their science teaching abilities.

This is a no cost partnership for AFA. Space Explorers markets all of AFA’s K-12 grants and education programs to its members via their website. They also provide judges for our grants. As part of the partnership, if AFA awards an Educator Grant to a teacher to purchase of Space Explorers programs (which are $500), SE will match with their own $250 so the cost of program is free for the teachers.

Teachers in Space – Teachers in Space is an organization of dedicated individuals working toward common goals to make it possible for large numbers of teachers to explore space, return Astronaut-Teachers to American classrooms, and provide teachers opportunities to impact the next generation by sharing their experiences, knowledge, and adventure. This organization was brought to Ann Sagle’s attention by Buzz Aldrin who is on their Board of Advisors. They have not yet served as a judge because this is a new partnership. Again, no cost.

Technology Students Association – The Technology Student Association (TSA) is the only student organization devoted exclusively to the needs of students interested in technology. Open to students enrolled in or who have completed technology education courses, TSA’s membership includes over 150,000 middle and high school students in 2,000 schools spanning 47 states. TSA is supported by educators, parents and business leaders who believe in the need for a technologically literate society. TSA sponsors a national conference that is packed with competitive events and challenging activities that foster personal growth and leadership development.

In 2006, AFA became a two-year sponsor of these national contests for a total cost of $3000 (for 2 years). This included a booth during the Education Fair and branding of one of the competitive events (of our choosing). In 2006, AFA sponsored both the Flight Design & Flight Endurance competitions with Ann Sagle serving as a judge for both events.

In 2007, AFA sponsored the Technology Bowl competition and served as a judge. Also in 2007, Ann served as an advisor on their Competitive Rules Committee. In 2008, the conference was held in Orlando and members of the Central Florida chapter served as judges for both flight contests. In 2008, Ann Sagle received TSA’s Outstanding Recognition Award.

TSA provides judges for our grants and promotes our programs to all its teachers’ advisors. The 2009 competition will be held in Denver, and Ann Sagle has already contacted the Mile High Chapter to solicit their support for the event by providing judges. We have not yet committed to a sponsorship which is $1500 plus staff travel costs. There may be an opportunity to visit with a major potential donor who lives in Denver if AFA Headquarters decides to send a representative.

US Dept of Education – Tony Fowler is the Executive Director of Federal Interagency Committee on Education for US Dept of Ed. NASA, Tony and the Department of Education are members of NCAE and regularly serve as a judge for educator grants. This is a no cost partnership.

USA TODAY – 2009 represents the 18th partnership year with USA Today on the Visions of Explorations program. USA Today provides AFA with exposure to over 1100 classrooms and 250,000 students and their parents annually. In addition, USA Today provides four $250 grants to Visions teachers who submit an essay on how they use the program in their classroom. USA Today local reps provide training to teachers, works with our AFA chapters and support AFA programs by providing judges and an website presence. This cost of the Visions program for the 2008-2009 school year is roughly $200,000 – half of which is paid by the chapters. The cost to AFA Headquarters is about $100,000 per year. USA Today’s in kind donations yearly are roughly $50,000 in terms of their staff travel costs, AFA specific grants, production and delivery. USA Today makes no money of this program. They also provide up to four judges each year for our use. USA Today is also a member of NCAE. AFA is a member of their Education Advisory Panel that meets once a year. Ann Sagle represents AFA on this panel.

Virginia Department of Aviation – A member of NCASE, the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) education and aviation awareness programs are taking place throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia for the benefit of citizens of all ages. The Virginia Department of Aviation manages the Virginia level of the International Aviation Art Contest, offers teachers grants, and administers two scholarships for high school seniors. DOAV is a member of NCAE and promotes AFA grants and scholarships to aviation and aerospace teachers statewide, as well as serves as a judge.

Wayne County Airports Authority – another NCAE member who provides judges for our grants and scholarships at no cost.

Wolf Aviation Fund – The Wolf Foundation hopes to help people and projects that benefit general aviation by identifying talented, worthy individuals - often working in collaboration with others - and worthwhile projects and providing them support. Rol Morrow, Executive Director, is a member of NCASE and serves as a judge. This is a no cost partnership.
