Chairman of the Board

Scott Van Cleef, of Fincastle, Virginia, is the Chairman of the Board for the Air Force Association. He joined AFA in June 1972, and has since served in a wide variety of leadership positions including as Vice Chairman of the Board for Field Operations, National Director and Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee. He is a Life Member.

Van Cleef served as a Chapter President; the Virginia State President; and the Central East Region President. He has also served on the afa21 Internal Review Team; the afa21 Field Structure Team; the Field Council; the Strategic Planning Committee; and the Audit Committee.

Van Cleef was recognized as the Virginia State Member of the Year twice; and also received the AFA Medal of Merit, AFA Exceptional Service Award, and AFA Chairman's Citation. He was also President of AFA's medium-sized Chapter of the Year 2005 and State Organization of the Year 2008.

Van Cleef entered the Air Force in 1972 as a distinguished graduate of Purdue University's ROTC program. He was also a distinguished graduate of pilot training and has since flown the F-4, F-5 and F-16 fighters. He commanded an F-16 fighter squadron and was the vice commander of an F-16 training wing. Additionally, he served a joint tour in Cairo, Egypt, and staff tours at Headquarters Air Combat Command and the Air Staff. He served as deputy commander of 16th Air Force and as director of the Combined Operations Center at 5th Allied Tactical Air Force in Vicenza, Italy. Prior to his final Pentagon tour as the director of regional affairs, Office of the Deputy Undersecretary of the Air Force for International Affairs, he was commander of the 52nd Fighter Wing, Spangdahlem AB, Germany where he also commanded the 52nd Air Expeditionary Wing during the Kosovo conflict. He is a command pilot with more than 3,300 flying hours.

His military decorations included the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal; Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster; Bronze Star Medal; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters; Air Medal with oak leaf cluster; and Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

Van Cleef attended Purdue University in W. Lafayette, Indiana, where he received his Bachelor’s of Science in Business Economics. He received his Master’s in Political Science at Auburn University at Montgomery, in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended the National War College and was a Fellow at MIT’s Seminar XXI program (Foreign Politics, Int’l Relations and the National Interest).

He and his wife Barbara, have two children. They reside in Fincastle, Virginia, where he owns his own woodworking business, Van Cleef Fine Woodworking.
