TSgt Kevin D. Vance is a Terminal Attack Controller
with the 17th Air Support Operations Squadron, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.
A combat leader, he leads by example. During two deployments to Afghanistan, his
performance of duty with the Army’s 1st Ranger Battalion earned him a Silver Star,
Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medals. His tactical leadership was
further emphasized following the death of four team members. He
continued the mission by identifying enemy
positions, directed successful strikes in “danger close” conditions in
10,000-foot mountain conditions.
He directed two A-10s on strafing passes on enemy locations. His actions eliminated
the immediate threat and deterred further attacks. He was integral in execution of
the Joint Special Operations plan. When his mounted patrol was ambushed, he called
for close air support. He coordinated mortar fire to mark the target, then calmly
directed multiple drops of ordnance.
Sergeant Vance, 27, was born in Vancouver, Washington. He entered the Air Force in
1994. After completing Tactical Air Command and Control training at Hurlburt Field,
Florida, he was assigned to the Army’s 2nd Armored Calvary at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
He received air assault training at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and graduated from airborne
school at Fort Benning, Georgia. He saw service in Kuwait in 1997 and later at Camp
Casey in Korea. He arrived at Hunter AAF in 1999.
An enthusiastic volunteer, he works with the Boy Scouts in outdoor skills, supports
area veterans’ organizations, the Combined Federal Campaign and the Salvation Army.
He is an active church member. He maintains parachute proficiency with the local Sky
Diving Club. |
