Colonel Jack D. Howell, II, USMC (Ret.), Jean Ribault Senior High School, FL has been selected by the Aerospace Education Foundation (AEF) as the 17th recipient of the prestigious Christa McAuliffe Memorial Teacher of the Year Award his efforts in aerospace education at the Jean Ribault Senior High School. This school is an aviation magnet school and his efforts have turned the program into a huge success story. He has amassed numerous resources for the students to include flight simulators, financial grants, and donated flight instructor time. He has developed numerous innovative programs to include a Dual Enrollment Program with the local community college to provide high school students with college credits, a unique flight-training program for inner-city youth to obtain a private pilot’s license and developed aviation related career paths for his students. His dedication and determination in teaching America’s youth about science and the importance of aerospace education were key to his selection as Teacher of the Year.
The Christa McAuliffe Memorial Award honors a public, private, or parochial classroom teacher (kindergarten through twelfth grade) who demonstrates excellence in furthering the concepts of aerospace technologies in the classroom through successful, innovative curricular classroom programs with $1000.
The General James R. McCarthy Air Force Association Chapter #397 nominated Jack Howell for the national award. He will be recognized for his outstanding contributions at the AFA National Convention and Exposition in Washington, D.C. and receive his award on September 15, 2002.
