Protocol Guidelines

Protocol Guidelines

The Air Force Association is an independent, nonprofit, civilian organization. Our members are veterans and include active duty, guard and reserve, military retirees, civilians with prior military service and, spouses of veterans. It is led by volunteer leaders at all levels.

Our first president, Jimmy Doolittle, in a newsletter dated May, 1947 wrote, "Generals, colonels, second looies, top-kicks and buck privates are all just plain "Mister" in AFA. While I've been elected to head up the Air Force Association, Meryll F. Frost, ex-Sgt and Dartmouth football star, is a vice-president and John P. Biehn, a former private, is one of the directors." Since our very beginning in 1947, military rank has not been used by AFA leaders. Everyone should be introduced using the AFA position held.

Courteous treatment of your guests is very important. The following guidelines are provided to help in planning your activities. Just remember there is no substitute for common sense.... "Protocol is not there to dictate to you. It’s there to help you."

AFA National Vice-Chairman of the Board for Field Operations
AFA National Vice-Chairman of the Board for Aerospace Education
