Secretary of Defense
SECRETARY OF DEFENSE ROBERT GATES, he was sworn in on December 18, 2006, as the 22nd Secretary of Defense. Dr. Gates is the only Secretary of Defense in U.S. history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly elected President. Secretary Gates joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1966 and spent nearly 27 years as an intelligence professional, serving six presidents. During that period, he spent nearly nine years at the National Security Council, The White House, serving four presidents of both political parties. Secretary Gates has been awarded the National Security Medal, the Presidential Citizens Medal, has twice received the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal, and has three times received CIA's highest award, the Distinguished Intelligence Medal.

GENERAL ROGER A. BRADY is Commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe; Commander, Air Component Command, Ramstein; and Director, Joint Air Power Competency Center, Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He has responsibility for Air Force activities in a theater spanning three continents, covering more than 20 million square miles, 92 countries and territories, and possessing one-fourth of the world's population and about one-third of the world's Gross Domestic Product. General Brady is a command pilot with more than 3,000 hours in T-37, T-38, T-1, KC-135, C-21 and C-5.

GEN. ARTHUR J. LICHTE has commanded, Air Mobility Command since September 2007. He entered the Air Force in 1971 through Manhattan College’s ROTC program and has held command positions at squadron, group and wing levels. He is a command pilot with 4,000 flying hours in a variety of aircraft. Prior to assuming his current position, General Lichte served as Assistant Vice Chief of Staff and Director, Air Force Staff, HQ Air Force.

GEN. THOMAS S. MOORMAN JR.USAF (RET.) was the vice chief of staff. He additionally represented the Air Force in the Strategic Defense Initiative program and was authorized to accept SDI program execution responsibilities on behalf of the Air Force. As commander and vice commander of Air Force Space Command, General Moorman was responsible for operating military space systems, ground-based radars and missile warning satellites, the nation's space launch centers at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., and Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., the worldwide network of space surveillance radars, as well as maintaining the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) force.

MAJ.GEN. RICHARD E. WEBBER is the Commander, 24th Air Force, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. General Webber is responsible for the Air Force's newest numbered air force which will provide combatant commanders with trained and ready cyber forces to plan and conduct cyberspace operations, and to extend, maintain and defend the Air Force portion of the global information grid. The general has commanded an Air Force station, a space launch squadron, a missile operations group and a space wing.

CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT OF THE AIR FORCE JAMES A. ROY became the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force in June 2009. He represents the highest enlisted level of leadership, and as such, provides direction for the enlisted force and represents their interests, as appropriate, to the American public, and to those in all levels of government. He serves as the personal adviser to the Chief of Staff and the Secretary of the Air Force on all issues regarding the welfare, readiness, morale, and proper utilization and progress of the enlisted force.

General Johnny Alison, USAF (Ret.)
GEN. JOHNNY ALLISON, USAF (RET.) Johnny Alison was a kid from Florida who dreamed of becoming a pilot, and grew up to be one of the best the United States ever produced. But that wasn’t his entire story—Alison also traveled secretly with the highest level diplomats in the world, worked closely with the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain, assisted the Soviet Union in organizing their air arm to fight the Luftwaffe, and without orders, set up a critical lend-lease supply to the Middle East. Alison became an ace fighter pilot during his tenure as squadron commander with the 75th Fighter Squadron in China, flying P-40s with the former “Flying Tigers.” Following WWII, Alison served as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Aeronautics in the Truman Administration and as President of the Air Force Association, and rose to the rank of Major General in the Air Force Reserve. Today, he runs his own company and continues to remain active in many pursuits.

Colonel Richard E. Cole, USAF (Ret.)
COLONEL RICHARD E. COLE was General Doolittle’s co-pilot during the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in 1942. He enlisted November 22, 1940. Completed pilot training and commissioned as Second Lieutenant, July, 1941. Remained in China-Burma-India after Tokyo Raid until June 1943, and served again in the China-Burma-India Theater from October, 1943 until June, 1944. Relieved from active duty in January, 1947 but returned to active duty in August 1947. He was Operations Advisor to Venezuelan Air Force from 1959 -1962. Decorations include Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Chinese Army, Navy, Air Corps Medal, Class A, 1st Grade.

Major Thomas C. Griffin (Ret.)
MAJOR THOMAS C. GRIFFIN was the navigator on B-25 number nine, the Whirling Dervish, during the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in 1942. He was commissioned through the University of Alabama’s Reserve Officer Training Corps program and entered military service on 5 July 1939 as a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery. In February 1942, he volunteered for a highly classified mission— the Doolittle Raid—and was transferred to Columbia, South Carolina. He was to be one of 80 volunteers to fly B-25 bombers from an aircraft carrier—a feat never before attempted—to targets in Japan. After the Tokyo Raid, Griffin served as a B-26 navigator in North Africa participating in numerous missions in support of Operation TORCH and in preparation for the invasion of Sicily. On 4 July 1943, he was shot down over Sicily and captured by the Germans. He remained a prisoner of war for 22 months until he was released in April 1945. Griffin’s decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and Chinese Army, Navy, Air Corps Medal, Class A, 1st Grade.

AMBASSADOR WILLIAM M. BELLAMY is the Senior Vice President of National Defense University, before which he was the Ambassador to Kenya from 2003 through 2006. During his tour in Kenya, Ambassador Bellamy directed U.S. counter-terrorism programs in the Horn of Africa. He also supervised the United States government's largest foreign HIV/AIDS program and led multi-national efforts to combat corruption and promote good governance in Kenya.
