AFA Salutes Air National Guard and Employers

Arlington, Virginia – The Air National Guard and Employers of guardsmen will receive Air Force Association awards on September 25, 2006 at the Air & Space Conference 2006 Opening and Awards Ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

A traditional Air National Guards officer and enlisted member and their civilian employers in will be honored for their patriotism with the Air National Guard George W. Bush Award.

Col. (Dr.) Dean L. Winslow, chief flight surgeon, Delaware Air National Guard, and his civilian employer, the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, San Jose, Calif., represented by the chief medical officer, Dr. Alfonso Banuelos, will be recognized. Colonel Winslow has volunteered to deploy on numerous occasions and in 2005 he coordinated military public health in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Medical colleagues at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center worked extra hours and additional clinics to care for his patients and assumed many of his teaching and administrative responsibilities. The medical center also supplemented his active duty pay to avoid any economic hardship for his family.

Senior Airman Brooke E. Gorman, retention office manager, 177th Fighter Wing Mission Support Flight, New Jersey Air National Guard, and her civilian employer, Clipper Magazine, Mountville, Pa., will also receive the G.W. Bush Award. Clipper Magazine, represented by the area sales manager, Richard Nichols, provided job continuity support when Senior Airman Gorman was mobilized for Operation Noble Eagle.

Each G.W. Bush Award recipient will receive a $500 AFA check and plaque, made possible by contributions from William W. Spruance. The Air National Guard also provides a Minute Man statue to the guardsmen and framed painted pictures to the employers.

Additional Air National Guard awards scheduled for presentation include the Earl T. Ricks Award to Headquarters First Air Force, Air Forces Northern and The Continental United States NORAD Region Team, Operation Noble Eagle, and the Dick Red Award to Master Sgt. Jon G. Beam, weapons expediter, 122nd Fighter Wing, Ft Wayne IAP, Ind. The 148th Fighter Wing, Minnesota ANG will receive the Air National Guard Outstanding Unit Award.
