Air Force Magazine Names New Editor in Chief

Arlington, VA, April 30, 2002 – The Air Force Association (AFA) has named Robert S. Dudney to be the next Editor-in-Chief of Air Force Magazine. Dudney, currently the magazine’s Executive Editor, succeeds John T. Correll, who retires today after almost 20 years on staff.

Dudney joined the magazine in 1987 as a Senior Editor and became its second-ranking editor in 1989. He holds a bachelor's degree from University of Missouri School of Journalism and a master’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Before joining Air Force Magazine, he was national ecurity correspondent for US News & World Report. He also has headed the Defense Writers Group in Washington, D.C. since 1979.

“With Bob, we continue a tradition of outstanding leadership in journalism at the helm of our magazine,” said John A. Shaud, AFA’s executive director and publisher of Air Force Magazine. “Not only is he a superb journalist, he is experienced in national security issues and AFA.”

Dudney becomes only the seventh Editor-in-Chief in the 60-year history of the journal of the Air Force Association.

Air Force Magazine reports on Air Force, defense, and aerospace news, and publishes background material on US Air Force systems, personnel, programs, operations, and history. The annual Air Force Almanac and Space Almanac are respected source references for the aerospace industry, the Air Force, Department of Defense, Congress, and the press. As Editor in Chief, Dudney will oversee all aspects of magazine management and publication. He will also be associate publisher and director of publications for the Association.

Correll started his long news career as a reporter and copy editor for the Daily Record in Hickory, N.C. He then served 20 years in the Air Force before joining the magazine staff as a Senior Editor in 1982. He became Executive Editor in 1983 and Editor-in-Chief in 1984. In addition to handling his editorial duties, Correll served as a senior staff advisor to the Association’s executive committee and Board of Directors on national defense issues and policy.

Prior to joining Air Force Magazine, he was Chief of Editorial Services for American Forces Information Service in Washington, D.C. He also was a former editor of Airman, which is the official magazine of the United States Air Force.
