AFA and AEF Recognize Reservists, Guardsmen and Their Employers
Arlington, VA, October 8, 2003 – The Air Force Association (AFA) and its affiliate
the Aerospace Education Foundation (AEF) recently presented eight awards to recognize
traditional Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members and their employers
during ceremonies at its Annual National Convention in Washington, D.C. The award
presentations were part of AFA’s celebration of “Up From Kitty Hawk” – the 100th
Anniversary of Powered Flight.”
AFA Chairman of the Board John J. Politi presented the Citizen Airman and George
Bush awards during the Opening Awards Ceremony that focused on celebrating the 100th
anniversary of powered flight.

Airmen and civilians, Guardsmen and Reservists give their best day-in and day-out
for the good of our Air Force and the nation,” Politi added.
The Citizen Airman award recipients included Maj Janey D. Worth a flight nurse
assigned to the 908th Aero Medical Evacuation Squadron, Maxwell AFB, Ala., and her
civilian employer, Managed Access, Inc., a medical staffing and project management
company in Tampa, Fla. Company president, Jerri Klemme-Zaic accepted the award. SSgt
George Pizarro, fire team member and heavy weapons specialist of the 944th Security
Forces Squadron was recognized for his support of homeland defense. His employer, the
Phoenix Police Department, represented by Chief of Police, Harold L. Hurtt, was on
hand to receive the award.
The ANG George Bush awards were presented to an officer and an enlisted traditional
Air National Guard member who served in the aerospace expeditionary force and to their
employers. Capt. Eric N. Erickson, physician assistant with the 177th Medical Group,
New Jersey ANG and his employer, the JFK Johnson Rehabilitating Institute Center for
Head Injuries, Edison, NJ. His supervisor is Dr. Caroline O. McCagg, medical director
at the Institute Center for Head Injuries. TSgt. Kevin P. Combs, a navigation
technician with the 176 Airlift Wing, Alaska Air National Guard and his employer,
Federal Express, represented by Alan Black, FedEx supervisor also received an award.
Each award recipient received a certificate and $500 award made possible through
the contribution of foundation trustee, William W. Spruance and an anonymous
foundation member. The Air Force Reserve Command also provided large stone eagle for
the two Citizen Airman employers.
Approximately 1,200 people attended AFA’s awards ceremony held at the Marriott
Wardman Park Hotel. Guest speaker was Gen. Hal M. Hornburg, Commander, Air Combat
Command, Langley AFB, Virginia. The patriotic event included a special 100th
Anniversary of Flight videotape and musical performance by the Randolph Macon
Academy Choir.
