AFA Awards the 2010 Capt. Jodi Callahan Memorial Graduate Scholarship

Arlington, VA – The Air Force Association (AFA) recently announced the selection of Air Force Staff Sergeant Ryan VanArtsdalen for the 2010 Captain Jodi Callahan Memorial Graduate Scholarship.

Sergeant VanArtsdalen is pursuing a Master of Aeronautical Science degree with an emphasis in Aviation Management and Aerospace Safety Systems. During his personal and volunteer time he coached little league baseball and donated numerous hours toward the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Habitat for Humanity. He was recently selected to become a Second Lieutenant by attending Officer Training School.

AFA awards the $1,000 Callahan Memorial Scholarship annually to deserving Air Force active duty, full time Guard or Reserve pursuing a non-technical master’s degree.

Captain Jodi Callahan was an AFA National Director and a Trustee of the Aerospace Education Foundation. She was a life member of AFA. This scholarship is possible because of the generous donations of her family and friends through the Jodi Callahan Memorial Fund.

“We are happy to be able to present the Callahan Memorial Graduate Scholarship to Sgt. VanArtsdalen,” said S. Sanford Schlitt, Vice Chairman of the Board for Aerospace Education. “His motivation to pursue higher education while being active already in his chosen field is notable and we congratulate him.”

“Jodi Callahan was pursuing her second master's degree at George Washington University at the time of her death. Her Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University and the program at George Washington were both off duty education supported in part by the Air Force,” said the Callahan Family. “We offer our congratulations to this year’s recipient of the scholarship and wish him the best of luck in his endeavors.”

“Sgt. VansArtsdalen has done some great work in the Air Force,” said Mike Dunn, President of AFA. “We are pleased to be able to contribute to his educational goals while continuing to honor the memory of Capt. Callahan.”
