30 Years after Desert One
Arlington, VA – The Air Force Association (AFA) today released the following statement remembering the heroic efforts of the USAF Air Commandos and Marines of Desert One:
Thirty years ago, April 24, 1980, a specialized team of Air Commandos and Marines embarked on a mission attempting the rescue of their hostage countrymen from Iran. They died in the line of duty on Desert One. Today, we remember their bravery and dedication, as they risked – and lost – their lives for others.
These courageous Airmen and Marines answered the nation’s call to service and placed the lives of their countrymen ahead of their own. We remember them as heroes.
As we honor their memory, we remind ourselves to always be vigilant that the valor of our service men and women is matched by the best possible equipment, training, support and technology to allow them to fight and win for the cause of freedom.
