AFA Statement about Relief Efforts in Haiti
Arlington, VA – The Air Force Association (AFA) today released the following statement about the relief efforts in Haiti by the U.S. military:
“Today, our thoughts are with the people of Haiti and the men and women of our Armed Forces as they respond in their relief. The suffering people of Haiti are in dire need, and once again, this massive relief effort is a credit to our nation’s men and women in uniform and the generosity of the American people.
“Large-scale humanitarian missions have become an important function of the U.S. military dating back to the heroic Berlin Airlift more than 60 years ago, and more recently, tsunamis and hurricanes. So often, when a natural disaster or other tragedy strikes, the world turns to the U.S. military as the first and largest responder. The U.S. military takes on major responsibilities that no one else can do. This is possible only because of the global reach of our forces, enabled by satellites, by fuel tankers, by cargo aircraft and much more. We’re proud of the rapid response of the U.S. Air Force, first to secure an airfield and begin the early coordination of supplies, and now to airdrop supplies to the Haitian people. The American people can feel pride in the efforts of the entire military.
“Our Armed Forces deserve our support and appreciation. More than that, they must be fully equipped and broadly prepared for all eventualities so that they can continue to answer the nation’s call, whether the next mission is military or humanitarian.”
