Global “Air Commons” at Risk

The Mitchell Institute for Airpower Studies will present a panel discussion of the recently published paper, “Sustaining the Air Commons.” Panelists include Dr. Rebecca Grant, Director of the Mitchell Institute; Lt. Col. Kelly M. Martin, USAF, Senior Military Fellow, Center for a New American Security (CNAS) in Washington, D.C.; and Oliver Fritz, Assistant Director of Strategic Planning at HQ USAF in Washington, D.C.

Colonel Martin and Mr. Fritz are the co-authors of the study, which they researched and wrote for CNAS as part of a larger publication, “The Contested Commons.”

Since World War I, say the authors, access to the air has been a foundation of military power. That foundation is at risk. Just how serious is threat to the “contested commons” of the air? Martin and Fritz contend that US access to the air commons, while widely available today, could quickly evaporate. Their report warns: “The United States takes undisputed control of the air for granted. It should not.”
