AFA’s Chairman of the Board Receives Air Force Exceptional Service Award
Arlington, VA – The Air Force Association proudly announces the selection of Joseph E. Sutter as one of the most recent recipients of the Air Force Exceptional Service Award. After displaying outstanding service to the United States Air Force as the chairman of the Board of Directors of AFA from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2010, Sutter was presented with this honor on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at the 2010 AFA Anniversary Dinner.
AFA is an independent, nonprofit organization promoting public understanding of aerospace power and the pivotal role it plays in the security of the nation. As chairman, Sutter took great initiatives to help AFA further convey its mission.
To fulfill its mission to educate, Sutter saw under his tenure the establishment of both the Mitchell Institute for Airpower Studies and the AFA Air Force Breakfast Series. The Mitchell Institute, with its academically rigorous reports, presentations and series, is dedicated to expanding airpower thinking and increasing public awareness. It provides a venue to share knowledge with the press and public. Similarly, the Air Force Breakfast series provides a venue for senior Air Force leaders to communicate directly with the press and public.
To advance AFA’s advocacy mission on Capitol Hill, a series of midday briefings for congressional staff was produced to increase their knowledge of national security issues. Also, the new Airpower Advocates program, a national network of influential civic leaders, was created to engage local civic groups and media through weekly teleconferences.
In addition, the creation of the national high school cyber defense competition, CyberPatriot, has been a great achievement, reaching tens of thousands of students. This unique program increases students’ awareness and knowledge of cybersecurity threats and countermeasures.
“I’m really honored to receive this esteemed award for the work and initiatives taken on by the Air Force Association during my tenure,” Sutter said. “I used my time as chairman to advance our goals, carry out our mission and promote the great work of our United States Air Force. I feel privileged to have had such an opportunity.”
