AFA Announces 2012 Spring Pitsenbarger Awardees
Arlington, VA – The Air Force Association today announced the spring recipients of the 2012 Pitsenbarger Awards, recognizing outstanding individuals from across the country who are pursuing higher education.
The award is named for William H. Pitsenbarger, an Airman First Class who gave his life in Vietnam defending his comrades. For his heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Air Force Cross on June 30, 1966, which was upgraded to the Medal of Honor in 2000.
AFA’s Pitsenbarger Awards provide a one-time grant of $400 to selected top USAF enlisted personnel graduating from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) who plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree. The grants coincide with the CCAF graduation ceremonies held each Spring and Fall.
The award is based on distinguished activity encompassing great leadership, scholastic achievement, education goals and job performance, along with a Commander’s endorsement.
“Each year we receive a number of applications, and this group symbolizes the best of the best,” said George Muellner, AFA’s Vice Chairman of the Board for Aerospace Education. “As an Association dedicated to both supporting our Airmen and encouraging the pursuit of education, AFA is extremely pleased to be able to recognize and award these dedicated Airmen and scholars.”
