AFA Welcomes Senate confirmation of General Welsh as Chief of Staff

Arlington, VA – The Air Force Association voices strong support for the leadership of General Mark A. Welsh III, who was confirmed August 2, 2012, by the U.S. Senate as the 20th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, by unanimous consent.

“General Welsh has been recognized by many for being a committed and talented leader,” said Sandy Schlitt, AFA’s Chairman of the Board. “AFA looks forward to working closely with him as we work to defeat the challenges of our Air Force, including an aging fleet, restructuring of our forces and limited resources.”

Welsh entered the Air Force in June 1976 as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. In his 36-year career, he has been assigned to numerous operational, command and staff positions. Most previously, he was the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe, where he was responsible for Air Force activities, conducted through 3rd Air Force, in an area of operations covering almost one-fifth of the globe.

“Having spent more than three decades in the Air Force, General Welsh is intimately familiar with the concepts and capabilities that our 21 century Air Force employs, as well as the many challenges now facing our Airmen,” said David T. “Buck” Buckwalter, AFA’s Acting President. “The Air Force Association congratulates him on his confirmation and we look forward to continuing to work with him during his tenure as USAF Chief of Staff.”
