University of Maryland University College Joins CyberPatriot as Cyber Silver Sponsor
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Air Force Association (AFA) is pleased to announce the addition of the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) as a Cyber Silver Sponsor of AFA’s CyberPatriot—National High School Cyber Defense Competition.
CyberPatriot is AFA’s flagship youth program that educates, excites and inspires high school students to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Established in 2008, CyberPatriot helps develop cyber security skills in today's youth who will become the nation’s future cyber defenders and cyber leaders. The competition's unique structure provides students hands-on learning while competing virtually against their peers and introduces many to the idea of cyber security as a profession.
“Ultimately, CyberPatriot provides relevant professional development skills that are crucial to equipping young individuals to be both career- and college-ready," said Bernie Skoch, CyberPatriot Commissioner. "UMUC’s specialized concentration on professional development falls in line with several of the goals we set out to achieve with CyberPatriot. I am positive that the level of skill and excitement they will bring to the program will only make it stronger."
UMUC has an enrollment of more than 92,000 students in more than 23 countries around the world. Founded in 1947, UMUC is one of 11 accredited, degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland. Offering a broad range of degree programs, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees in cybersecurity, UMUC has earned a global reputation for excellence. With its Cyber Silver level sponsorship of the CyberPatriot competition, UMUC is contributing to the nationwide initiative to improve STEM development in high school across the country.
“UMUC is proud to support AFA’s CyberPatriot competition,” said Marie Cini, acting provost at UMUC. “We are excited to be part of a program that encourages high school students to excel in their education and become the leaders of tomorrow in science, technology, engineering and math.”
