The Air Force Association Becomes a Commemorative Partner with the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration Program

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Air Force Association is proud to serve as a Commemorative Partner of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration. This program will include activities that will honor American Vietnam War Veterans and their families, the Prisoners of War, Federal Agencies, and all other organizations that served in support of our Armed Forces and our allies.

In collaboration with this initiative is a Vietnam War POWs 40th Anniversary of Freedom Reunion, 22-25 May 2013. A ceremonial dedication on May 23, 2013 with a Formal Reunion Dinner at the Nixon Library on May 24, 2013 will recognize Operation Homecoming and honor the return of American prisoners of war from Vietnam. The dinner will be held at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, CA. Forty years to the day, on May 24, 1973, President and Mrs. Nixon welcomed home the POWs with a formal dinner at the White House. The 40th Anniversary of Freedom Dinner will be hosted by the Richard Nixon Foundation; with support from the United States Department of Defense.

"This is an opportunity for us to remember and honor those who served their country during the Vietnam War,” said Craig McKinley, President of the Air Force Association. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten and part of our responsibility at AFA to make sure it isn’t."

The three phase execution plan for the commemorative program will last for a total of 13 years including a period of preparation from 2011 – 2014, a period of execution from 2015 -2017, and a period of sustainment from 2018-2025. The Secretary of Defense will determine a schedule of major events and the priority of efforts in order to ensure the achievement of the objectives outlined by Public Law 110-181 SEC. 598.
