AFA’s Chairman of the Board Presents Actor Gary Sinise with Gill Robb Wilson Award

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Air Force Association proudly announced the selection of Gary Sinise as the recipient of the Gill Robb Wilson Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service to our nation’s Veterans.

Gary Sinise is an award-winning actor, director, and musician who, through the impact of his role in Forrest Gump as an amputee vet, changed the lives of many disabled veterans. In 2010, the Gary Sinise Foundation was officially formed and is dedicated to serving the nation by honoring our military, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need.

“Gary Sinise & The Lieutenant Dan Band” play approximately 50 concerts a year, raising money for the Gary Sinise Foundation and uplifting the spirits of our troops overseas and here at home.

More recently, the Gary Sinise Foundation partnered with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation to launch “Building for America’s Bravest”, a joint effort to build smart homes for some of our nation’s most severely wounded veterans.

Bolstering the morale of service members, whether they are deployed overseas or recovering after being wounded in combat, is a key goal of Sinise's Lt. Dan Band. Earlier this month Sinise visited TSgt Christofer Curtis, a CV-22 flight engineer from Hurlburt Field, Fla., who experienced a number of injuries including 17 broken bones in an aircraft crash during a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. Curtis first met Sinise in the hospital during his initial recovery, and commented that his Command, his family, his close friends, and people like Gary Sinise gave him the support he needed to cope with his recovery.

“The Air Force Association proudly recognizes the distinguished accomplishments of Gary Sinise and the support he continues to provide our nation’s greatest heroes,” said George Muellner, AFA’s Chairman of the Board. “Through his many philanthropic initiatives, Sinise embodies the ideas of giving back, remembering, and honoring our servicemen and women.”

The Gill Robb Wilson Award is given for the most outstanding contribution in the field of arts and letters. For a list of our previous recipients please visit http://www.afa.org/aboutus/recipients.asp#wilson.
