AFA Presents 2003 National Aerospace Awards
Arlington, VA, October 8, 2003 – The Air Force Association (AFA) recently presented
five aerospace awards during opening ceremonies of its Annual National Convention in
Washington, D.C. The award presentations were part of AFA’s celebration of “Up From
Kitty Hawk” – the 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight.”
AFA Chairman of the Board John J. Politi presented the awards and was joined by
Gen. John Jumper, U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff and guest speaker. The following
awards were presented:
Joan Orr Award
The Air Force Spouse of the Year
Mrs Tammie Lynn Bocook
Robins AFA, Ga.
Theodore Von Karman Award
The most outstanding contribution in the field of Science and Engineering
823rd Red Horse Squadron
Hurlburt Field, Fla.
Gill Robb Wilson Award
The most outstanding contribution in the field of Arts and Letters
Ms Victoria Clarke
Former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs
The Pentagon
Gen. Curtis, E. Lemay Award
The most outstanding bomber aircrew in the Air Force
40th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron
Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean
CMSAF Thomas N. Barnes Award
Outstanding Crew Chief of the Year
SSgt Russell O. Bledsoe
Dyess AFB, Texas
Following a 30-minute intermission that including the ribbon cutting ceremony to
open the Aerospace Technology Exposition that had an attendance of 9,000, other
awards presented included:
Hoyt S. Vandenberg Award
The most outstanding contribution in the field of Aerospace Education
HQ Air Education and Training Command
Technical Training Division
Randolph AFB, Texas
Thomas P. Gerrity Award
The most outstanding contribution in the field of Systems and Logistics
Col (Sel) Frank Gorman
HQ USAF, The Pentagon
Approximately 1,200 people attended AFA’s award ceremony held at the Marriott
Wardman Park Hotel. The patriotic event included a special 100th Anniversary of
Flight videotape and musical performance by the Randolph Macon Academy Choir from
Front Royal, Va.
