Air Force Association Presents Aerospace Awards

Arlington, VA, October 2, 2002 - The Air Force Association presented its top three highest awards recently at the Air Force Anniversary Dinner ceremony during the AFA National Convention in Washington, D.C. The convention focused on how the Air Force is responding to the global war on terrorism.

Gen. Richard B. Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, received the H.H. Arnold Award for most outstanding military contributions to national security. Myers was recognized for outstanding service and leadership to the nation and for successfully communicating the military requirements to fight the war on international terrorism to military commanders, coalition forces, Congress and the American people.

U.S. Rep. James V. Hansen from Utah was awarded the W. Stuart Symington Award for most outstanding civilian contributions to national security. Symington was recognized for advocating aerospace power and the Air Force as the world's principal air and space force, and for outstanding contribution to national defense.

Sydney Gillibrand, Chairman of AMEC, plc., in London, and Jerry Morgensen, President and CEO of Hensel Phelps Construction Company, Greeley, Colo., were co-recipients of the John R. Alison Award for most outstanding contributions to national defense by an industrial leader. Gillibrand and Morgensen were recognized for company leadership in renovating and rebuilding the Pentagon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The companies worked hand-in- hand to help the Department of Defense meet its one-year goal of getting Pentagon personnel back in their offices. AMEC was responsible for rebuilding the exterior of the Pentagon while Hensel Phelps concentrated on rebuilding the interior and the renovation of a damaged portion of the building.

The 55th Anniversary Dinner included a musical "Tribute to Heroes" featuring Daniel Rodriquez, "New York City's Singing Cop," and the United States Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants. Since 9/11, Rodriquez has become "America's Tenor" with his stirring performances of "God Bless America."

Approximately 1000 guests attended the dinner.
