Arlington, VA: The Air Force Memorial fund-raising campaign
took another significant step forward, receiving a contribution
of $2,000,000 from The Boeing Company. This is the first
installment of a $5,000,000 pledge made by Boeing. Boeing, the
world’s largest aerospace corporation, is also the largest
corporate donor to date for the Air Force Memorial. Boeing’s
Senior Vice President for Government Relations, Christopher
Hansen, presented the check to Air Force Memorial Foundation
President Chuck Link. Also on hand to receive the check was Air
Force Association President and Air Force Memorial Foundation
Trustee, Tom McKee.
“The Boeing Company has a strong and
lasting heritage with the Air Force” Boeing’s Chris Hansen said.
“We take great pride in providing these funds to build an
appropriate memorial to the brave men and women who have served
our country through this century.” Foundation President Chuck
Link noted, “The Air Force Memorial will also salute the vast
technological achievements that have made American airpower the
most formidable on earth.”
The Air Force Memorial will be built
on Arlington Ridge adjacent to the Arlington National Cemetery.
James Ingo Freed, of New York City’s famed Pei Cobb Freed
Architects, is the principal architect on the project.
The fund-raising campaign is a
central part of the Air Force Memorial process that began with
the passage of authorizing legislation in 1993, and continued
with site approval by the Commission of Fine Arts in 1994, the
National Capital Planning Commission in 1995, and the
enthusiastic endorsement of the design concept by both Commissions
in 1996.
The Air Force Memorial Foundation is
a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt organization whose purpose is
to construct a Memorial to the men and women of the United States
Air Force using only private funds. No taxpayer dollars will be
used. Contributions may be made directly to the Air Force Memorial
Foundation, 1501 Lee Highway, Arlington, VA 2209-1198, and, for
U.S. government employees, through the Combined Federal Campaign.
