Air Force Association Calls for Senate Support of Military Pay Increase

Arlington, VA, June 12, 1998 -- The Air Force Association strongly supports the military pay increase in the Fiscal Year 1999 House Defense Authorization Act. The House bill adds .5 percent to the administration's proposed 3.1 percent military pay raise.

"We are on the edge of a crisis. Our military people are beginning to vote with their feet," AFA President Doyle Larson said. "The pay gap between military and civilian pay is now 14 percent. This increase is a small but necessary step toward closing that gap."

The Air Force Association is part of the 5-million member Military Coalition, which has put its full weight behind the House bill. AFA has long been a strong supporter of narrowing the gap between military and civilian pay.

"At a time of budget surpluses, our military leaders should not be forced to trade off pay and other quality-of-life benefits for modernization funding," Larson said. "This is a false choice. We need both to keep quality people in our forces and to give them the most modern weapon systems."

Larson added, "Our military people are serving this country every day across the globe. They are doing their part. It's time the Congress and the administration did theirs."
