Hurlburt Chapter Recognizes Teachers of the Year for 2010

Hurlburt Chapter members and local educators gathered on April 8 to honor the Hurlburt Chapter Teachers of the Year for 2010. Guest Speaker for the event was Ms. Alexis Tibbetts, Okaloosa County School Superintendent. Approximately 40 members and guests attended this annual Chapter event to recognize some of the outstanding teachers in the area and thank them for the work they do.

The Hurlburt Chapter normally recognizes three Teachers of the Year representing elementary, middle, and high school. One of those teachers is selected as the overall Teacher of the Year for Hurlburt. That teacher also becomes the Chapter nominee to the AFA State Teacher of the Year competition.

This year the Chapter received seven nominations, but none from the High School level. Therefore, two Elementary School Teachers of the Year and one Middle School Teacher of the Year were selected. Nominations were received from Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Escambia and Walton counties. A chapter committee then selected the three winners from the nominees. Final selections were: Mr. Jeffrey Baugus, of Woodlawn Beach Middle School, Santa Rosa County, Mr. Victor Lowrimore, Principal; Ms Amy Davis, Kenwood Elementary School, Okaloosa County, Mr. Alan Lambert, Principal; and Ms Sandy Palmer, Shalimar Elementary School, Okaloosa County, Ms Sheila Lightbourne, Principal. Ms Palmer was also named the Overall Teacher of the Year.

Each winner was presented a plaque, a $250 check, an AFA membership and a coin from the Chapter. In addition, the Principal of each winner’s school was presented a US flag that had flown over the US Capitol. Ms Lightbourne, the Principal of Shalimar Elementary, received a $250 check for her school; and Ms Palmer, the Overall TOY also received a $250 check and a book bag from the National AFA organization. Ms Helen Rigdon of Congressman Jeff Miller’s office presented each winning teacher with a Certificate attesting that each teacher’s selection as a TOY had been made a permanent part of the Congressional Record.
