| Civil Air Patrol and AFA at the Fiesta Flambeau
New Orleans has Mardi Gras but San Antonio hosts the largest week-long party during “Fiesta Week” in April. Three million residents and visitors enjoy themselves at balls, parades, concerts, carnivals and “A Night in Old San Antonio.” The festival began in 1891 to commemorate the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has been a part of that celebration for the past ten years.
The Randolph, Lackland and Alamo CAP Composite squadrons joined forces
to march in the 62nd annual Fiesta Flambeau Parade on April 24. CAP first participated in 2000, as part of an USAF promotion sponsored by the Alamo Chapter of the Air Force Association.
In addition to the 26 CAP members marching in the parade, a Humvee, provided by the 443 Airlift Wing at Lackland, was driven by Alamo Chapter member SMSgt Annie Howell. The CAP/AFA entry was number seven in the overall line up of about one hundred entries and marched along the 2.6 mile route. The entry was seen by 300,000 persons in attendance and at least half a million television viewers.
