University of West Florida Cadets Receive Scholarships
Chapter President Dann Mattiza traveled to the Pensacola campus of the University of West Florida on September 4 to present two $1000 scholarships to third year AFROTC students. Cadet Joshua Baber and Cadet Juliette Albesa were the recipients of the awards, which were presented during the Leadership Lab for the cadet unit. The UWF AFROTC unit is a part of Detachment 014, located at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Cadets Baber and Albesa were chosen for the scholarships by the Detachment 014 staff based upon their leadership and scholarship.
Cadet Baber is the Administration Flight Commander for the Florida unit. He is a Psychology major with over a 3.0 GPA. He is also active in the Civil Air Patrol and has earned the Earhart Award with that organization. His father served in the U.S. Army, his Uncle in the U.S. Marine Corps, and his Grandfather in the National Guard. Cadet Baber’s goal is to become an F-22 fighter pilot.
Cadet Albesa is serving as the Communications Flight Commander. She is a Health Sciences major with concentration in the Medical Information Technology area. She also has a GPA of over 3.0. She spent four years in Junior ROTC prior to coming to UWF and is active in the Big Brothers/Sisters organization. She is also the Asian Sorority Interest Group Recruiting Chair for Females Achieving Cultural Exploration with Service (F.A.C.E.S.). Cadet Albesa’s goal is to become a member of the USAF Medical Corps.
