Aerospace Education Council

Vice Chairman, Aerospace Education Council, Communicates With the Field

Jim Hannam recently sent an email message to State Presidents, Chapter Presidents, and Aerospace Education Vice Presidents. The purpose of the email was to broaden Aerospace Education communications links within AFA, as well as to improve the flow of AE information to field units, with the vision to further strengthen Chapter/AFA AE Programs and Chapters themselves.

AFA's education objectives, approved by the Board of Directors, are:

  • AFA educates key decision makers and the public about the unique capabilities of Air Force aerospace power in the defense of our nation.
  • AFA supports science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs that lead to strengthening the nation's ability to meet its defense needs with technological superiority.
  • AFA provides educational opportunities to Air Force personnel to advance their professional development and to their families to enrich their lives and future potential.

In Hannam’s communication, he included the following:

CyberPatriot: See the CPII Video at the following hyperlink. http://career-resources.dice.com/articles/content/entry/tbd. Dice.com, a leading career website for technology and engineering professionals, videotaped the Orlando AFA CyberPatriot II Competition using portions of it in a news article ― it is well done. Chapters can consider using it in discussing CyberPatriot with local schools. Also see the April edition of Vision's of Exploration Newsletter, a partnership between USA Today and AFA, for more CP coverage as well as other information: http://www.usatoday.com/educate/afa/Monthly_news/April09/4-14-09.html.

Hannam said that information on CyberPatriot III for the 2010-11 school year, registration materials and other important data, should be out no later than April 15.

Chapter/State/National Teacher of the Year: All chapters are urged to support this very worthwhile aerospace education recognition program, which highlights superior STEM teachers in Chapter areas of responsibility and throughout your State. The State Teacher of the Year is eligible to compete for AFA National Teacher of the Year. As a reminder, the application submission deadline for National Teacher of the Year is May 31, 2010, so earlier deadlines need to be established for Chapter and State Teacher of the Year. Go to the AFA website for details on eligibility: http://www.afa.org/aef/aid/awards.asp.

AEC Teleconference Minutes, March 11, 2010: Mike Dunn and the Aerospace Education Council had a discussion with a House Staffer who supports the newly formed House Military Family Caucus. The Caucus was formed to educate House members about issues facing Military Family members such as: Mental Health, Education, DoD Healthcare, Families with special Needs Dependents, and Spouse Employment. AFA and AEC Member, former Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Rod McKinley is providing assistance and AFA will help publicize an upcoming Spouse Summit that will provide input to the Caucus.
