| Nation’s Employers Commit to Building a Stronger U.S. Workforce
Businesses and trade organizations representing employees of more than 20 million specialists in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are teaming up to strengthen America’s future high technology workforce. The Business and Industry STEM Education Coalition announced its mission and goals, including an effort to double the number of U.S. bachelor degree graduates in these critical areas from 200,000 to 400,000 by 2020. The Air Force Association is a member and supporter of the Coalition.
The program “America 2020: Will You be Ready” was held on March 12 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC. Speakers included Norman Augustine, Chair, National Academies Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy, which produced Rising Above the Gathering Storm; Miles O’Brien, Journalist and Host, This Week in Space; Dr. Charles M. Vest, President, National Academy of Engineering; and Richard Stephens, Coalition Planning Committee and Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Administration at The Boeing Company.
The Business and Industry STEM Education Coalition honored Representative Bart Gordon (TN), Chairman of the Science and Technology Committee, and Representative Vern Ehlers (MI), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Research and Science Education, for their tireless efforts around this important issue.
