| AFA Florida Participates in JROTC Drill Competition
The 2010 AFA (Florida) 22nd Annual Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) Drill Competition was held on March 20 on the University of South Florida Campus at Tampa, Florida. The competition was organized and conducted by the Cadre and Cadets of Detachment 158.
Many AFA Florida volunteers played supporting roles in the Drill Competition. Richard Ortega, AFA Florida Vice President for Aerospace Education, motivated and persuaded sponsors to donate trophy money to AFA Florida. Ernest Webster maintained accurate records of all trophy payments received from sponsoring Chapters. Sandy Schlitt, Vice Chairman, Aerospace Education, offered remarks to the audience and commended cadets and parents during the Awards opening ceremony. Schlitt also presented the Top Awards.
AFJROTC units from 17 high schools in Florida participated. Fifty-Two trophies were awarded: Five for the Individual Drill Category, three for Armed Exhibition Category, twenty-one for the Color Guard Category, twenty-one for the Drill Team Category, one for the Best of Meet and one for Overall Excellence.
All participating AFJROTC units were commended for their contributions to the success of the event. Cadets from FL-939 AFJROTC unit at Sandalwood High School consistently demonstrated precision routines that reflected the excellent training received from MSgt. Robert Doty and Lt Col Michael Clifton. FL-939 was the recipient of the top three trophies.
Much of the success achieved during the annual event was attributed to the superb performance of active duty USAF Honor Guard personnel from MacDill Air Force Base. They performed duties as Official Judges for the annual event. The accurate, timely and meticulous performance of these judges contributed to the success achieved.
