Arnold Air Society/Silver Wings Project – Elementary STEM Orientation (ESO)

This story follows the recent February Aerospace Education Newsletter edition titled “Elementary STEM Orientation (ESO) Pilot Project.” This project was created by Cadet Colonel Don Kinnee, Area VI Commander, AFROTC Detachment 380 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Cadet Kinnee, on his own initiative, established STEM orientation sessions for elementary students in the Kalamazoo geographical region. An early review of Kinnee’s activity demonstrated he had successfully addressed the Aerospace Education Council’s effort to increase the percentage of individuals with STEM related skills.

Seeing the eagerness of AAS Cadets from outside of Michigan to conduct the Elementary STEM Orientation Program, a high level of confidence was established that the project could be developed nationally. The data drawn from the pilot sites was presented during the recent National AAS Conclave in Seattle, Washington. The cadets approved the ESO as a Joint National Project for AAS in the coming school year.

Cadet Kinnee also gained support from Western Michigan University in printing more than 500 instructional pamphlets for use by AAS Cadets across the nation.
