Junior ROTC Units Are Encouraged to Join AFA

Air Force Junior ROTC HQ has encouraged their more than 900 units to partner more closely with AFA in a number of ways, including applying for the AFJROTC Grants, working with local AFA chapters, and having their units become members of AFA. HQ JROTC will reimburse the units for the $36 annual membership fee, and several have already signed up on-line.

The individual AFJROTC units must sign up as "units" to allow for the use of appropriated funds. As you likely know, we do not currently have a "unit membership" category but can accommodate these on the database by entering them in a manner similar to what we currently do with Subscriptions.

This is a great opportunity for us to build on our relationship with AFJROTC, especially at the unit-chapter level. VCFO, Joe Sutter, suggests chapters do the following:

  • Contact the AFJROTC units in your area. (A complete listing of the AFJROTC units is on the AFA web site.) Ensure the units have received the letter and encourage them to sign up. It is "free" for them and they can surely make good use of AIR FORCE Magazine as part of their classroom materials if they are not already doing so. This might encourage them to take advantage of other AFA resources like the web site and Daily Report. And importantly, the instructors or cadets might join AFA and become more active in the local AFA events.

  • AND AS A REALLY GOOD DEAL FOR CHAPTERS — If you get them to fill out the application, include your chapter name and number, and mark the application ATTN: JUDY, the AFA staff will manually track these applications. But in fairness, you need to be actively involved in the process in some way. If they sign up on their own, no rebate.
PLEASE NOTE: The unit will not be added as a chapter member to your roster since they are not individuals, and this will not count for support payment calculations — either as a recruited new member or for the number of chapter members. If you want a new member on the rolls of your chapter, recruit one of the JROTC instructors when you contact them.

Almost any application will do – if the intent is clear. There is a paper application on AFA’s web site which would work best. http://www.afa.org/members/JROTC_app.pdf .  Or you can suggest they sign up online.

Please give them the following instructions on how to complete the application if they want to use the online option:

Rank: Cadet
First Name: Unit State
Last: (Unit number) AFJROTC
Address1: Street address
Address 2: High School Name
Telephone: Fill in the phone number of the school or detachment if there is a separate number
Birth Date: Leave blank
Email: You need to put a valid email here or the system will not accept the application
Eligibility: Current Service – US Reserves
Cadet Type: JROTC
Profession: Other
Job: Other. (You must enter something in these blocks for the application to clear.)
How Found Out: Enter Chapter Number

Please take advantage of this opportunity to partner with AFJROTC. Direct questions to Judy Galbreath (JGalbreath@afa.org), or ext 4800.
