Changes in the AFA Teacher of the Year Program for 2008
In conjunction with the Aerospace Education Council, the Executive Committee at its December meeting approved
the following changes to AFA’s Teacher of the Year Programs. These changes take effect January 1, 2008.
Program information about each of these programs is enclosed and on the AFA website at
http://www.afa.org/aef/aid/awards.asp.
The only change made to the Chapter Teacher of the Year program is the addition of recommended criteria
contained in the attached document. This is a local award designed for AFA to recognize exceptional
performance in education at the local level. The recipient receives a check in the amount of $250, a
certificate, and an AFA tote bag. In addition, chapter teachers are eligible to compete for the State
Teacher of the Year Award.
Significant changes were made to both the State Teacher of the Year and the National Aerospace Teacher
of the Year Awards. The State Teacher of the Year Award is an award designed for AFA to recognize
exceptional performance in education at the state level. Recommended selection criteria are included
in the attached document. Recipients receive a check for $500, a certificate, a personalized jacket
and a free Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education membership sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol. To be
eligible, the state candidate must be a Chapter Teacher of Year selectee for the current year.
AFA’s prestigious National Aerospace Teacher of the Year award is presented annually to the educator who
has gone “the extra mile” to increase student interest in math, science and technology.
The National Teacher of the Year Award honors one public, private, or parochial classroom teacher
(kindergarten through twelfth grade) who demonstrates excellence in furthering the concepts of aerospace
technologies in the classroom through successful, innovative curricular classroom programs.
To be eligible the candidate must be an AFA State Teacher of the Year selectee during the most recent past
two academic years – June 2006 though May 2008.
As part of the award, the recipient receives a check for $3,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. to receive
the award at the AFA Air & Space Conference. Recognition is also given to the 2nd and 3rd place finalists
with award checks of $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.
