National Teacher of the Year Award – Nominations Now Being Accepted
AFA’s prestigious National Teacher of the Year Award is presented annually
to the educator who has gone “the extra mile” to increase student interest in math, science and
technology. Nominations are now being accepted. To be eligible the candidate must be an AFA State
Teacher of the Year selected during the most recent past two academic years – June 2006 though May 2008.
For 2008, the criteria and guidelines have been updated to streamline the selection process and make the nomination
process more attractive to both AFA state organizations and to eligible teachers.
The 2008 criteria is listed below. The deadline for nominations is May 30, 2008. Please contact Ann Sagle at

Guidelines Criteria
Educational History and Professional Development – max. 2 pages/double spaced
This section must be in outline form.
- List colleges and universities attended including post- graduate studies.
Indicate degrees earned and dates of attendance.
- List teaching employment history indicating time period, grade level, and subject area.
- Include professional association memberships; offices held; service on committees,
commissions, and task forces; and other relevant activities.
- List leadership activities in staff development and the training of future teachers.
- List awards and other recognition of your teaching.
Professional Biography – max. 2 pages/double spaced
- What were the factors that influenced you to become a teacher?
- Describe what you consider your greatest contributions and accomplishments in STEM education.
National Aerospace Teacher of the Year – max. 1 page/double spaced
As the 2008 National Aerospace Teacher of the Year, you would serve as a spokesperson and representative for the
entire teaching profession.
- What would be your message?
- What would you communicate to your profession and to the public?
Letters of Support – An effective letter of support contains evidence of personal knowledge of the teacher and an indication of the qualities, which would qualify the candidate to be the Air Force Association’s National Aerospace Teacher of the Year.
- One letter must be from the AFA Chapter President.
- One letter must be from the AFA State President.
- One letter must be from the superintendent or equivalent level administrator.
- The fourth may be from a colleague, student/former student, parent, or community leader.
- Incorporate the original letters as the last four pages of the portfolio.
