Jock Henebry
(1918 — 2007)
Major General John Philip "Jock" Henebry, USAF (Ret.), age 89, died
of heart failure while surrounded by his family at Evanston Hospital on
September 30. He was an AFA Board Member Emeritus, a former AFA
President (1956-57) and Chairman (1957-58).
General Henebry graduated from the University of Notre Dame in
1940. That July, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was sent to Texas for
pilot training. He was a veteran and hero of World War II and the Korean War
and flew 219 successful combat missions.
General flew missions along the U.S. coast looking for submarines,
but that assignment ended when Pearl Harbor was bombed. In 1942,
Mr. Henebry was transferred to the 3rd Bomb Group of the 5th Air
Force, based in Australia. He subsequently flew out of bases in New Guinea
and the Philippines as the Allies advanced.
General Henebry went on to serve as the commander of the 3rd
Attack Group, and was aboard the USS Missouri when Gen.
Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender.
General Henebry's wife, Mary, whom he married in 1944, died
in 2005. He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Callahan, Mary,
and Jeannine Rublee; two sons, John Jr. and Walter; five grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren A funeral Mass was held October 3, at SS. Faith, Hope & Charity
Church, 191 Linden Street, Winnetka, IL 60093. Interment was private. In lieu
of flowers, memorials may be made to Misericordia, 6300 Ridge
Avenue, Chicago, IL 60660-1017.
