IRS Exemption Approved!
It’s here!!!! We received a call Thursday, 24 September 2009, saying the Group Exemption was awaiting final approval if we (AFA)
would agree to an effective date of 8 February 2007. We, of course, returned the acceptance of the date immediately. On Tuesday,
29 September, we received the signed letter granting a group exemption from IRS!!!
The 8 February 2007 effective date is to our advantage. In the case that any donors to Field units formed the impression that donations
to States/Chapters were tax deductible, that in fact is now the case for donations made after 8 February 2007. Field units who have
received recent significant donations or contributions may wish to contact the donor and provide appropriate documentation for the donation
(noting exclusion of the fair market value of any tangible benefit given in conjunction with the donation).
We ask that States and Chapters not embark upon any major fundraising efforts until you receive, understand, and comply with additional
guidance we will provide to all field leaders and which will be a subject of training for Region/State Presidents on 30/31 October 2009.
We’ve waited this long – it is important we take the extra care to make sure we do this right. In any case, now all of AFA will be
operating under 501(c)(3) status!
