AFA Appoints Castle to Lead Legislative Affairs
Arlington, Va. – The Pentagon’s former Principal Deputy General Counsel is joining AFA as Director of Legislative Affairs. William S. Castle will lead AFA’s congressional engagement supporting Air and Space Forces, Airmen, Guardians, and Families.
Castle was Principal Deputy General Counsel for the Department of Defense since 2017, during which he spent a year as Acting General Counsel for the Department. In those roles he advised the Secretary and Deputy Secretary on legal matters and was Director of the Defense Legal Services Agency, which advises associated Defense Agencies and Field Activities.
Castle brings extensive Capitol Hill experience to his new role, having been Minority General Counsel for the Senate Armed Services Committee, as well as holding senior staff positions in the office of the President Pro Tempore and for Senator Orrin G. Hatch.
“Bill’s remarkable experience and track record will be a great asset to AFA and, by extension the Air Force and Space Force. He’s going to help us all to reinforce the importance of air and space power in the halls of Congress,” said Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Bruce “Orville” Wright. “I’m excited about the ways he will help inform AFA leaders across the spectrum of our members, chapters, and field leaders across the country and around the world, as well as insights he will be able to share that will arm them to raise public awareness of critical issues facing our Airmen, Guardians, and their Families.”
Castle attended Brown University and received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. In 2019, he was awarded the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service, the highest medal the DoD can confer on a non-career federal employee.
“I’m excited to join the highly effective air and space professionals at AFA,” Castle said. “This is a great opportunity to help tell the compelling story of the value America derives from having the world’s most powerful and effective Air Force and Space Force.”
