A New Title for a New Era: Announcing Air & Space Forces Magazine

Air Force Magazine Gets a New Name After 80 Years
ARLINGTON, Va. (September 2, 2022)—The Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) has renamed its flagship publication to fully reflect the breadth of its coverage and commitment to telling the stories of both the Air Force and the Space Force.
The new Air & Space Forces Magazine retains AFA’s decades-long commitment to editorial excellence and continues its tradition of comprehensive news and feature coverage of the Air & Space Forces.
“This new title reflects the new name of our storied Association and the reality that out of one Department of the Air Force live two independent yet tightly linked military services,” said AFA President and Magazine Publisher Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, USAF (Ret.) “The breadth of that coverage is not new, but the name change makes that clearer to everyone. Seeing is believing, and we want our commitment to space to be right there for all to see.”
The September 2022 issue, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the founding of an independent U.S. Air Force, is the first to bear the new title. September issues will start arriving in subscribers’ mailboxes within days. The magazine will also assume a new digital identity at AirAndSpaceForces.com. Beginning late on Sept. 8, 2022, the AirForceMag.com site will begin to redirect readers to the new internal address.
The birth of the Space Force in 2019, like that of the Air Force in 1947, reset the stage in national security affairs. In April, 76 years after its formation, the Air Force Association renamed itself the Air & Space Forces Association, keeping its familiar AFA “call sign” while making a formal commitment to equal support for the U.S. Space Force.
“Now it’s time to change the name of the magazine, too,” Wright said. The first issue of Air Force Magazine was published in December 1942 as an official military publication, directed by then Chief of the Army Air Forces Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold. After the founding of the Air Force Association in 1946, the magazine was transferred to the Association.
“Changing the title of a storied publication—and Association—is not something to be taken lightly,” said Air & Space Forces Magazine Editor in Chief Tobias Naegele. “Changing a name that is even older than our Association itself, a publication created at the direction of Hap Arnold himself, meant turning a page. But just as flexibility is the key to air power, so it is in publishing, as well.”
The name change will have no impact on existing links. Any news, history, or reference content found on search engines, and any page anyone ever bookmarked will continue to work.
“We’re embracing our future,” Naegele said, “not abandoning our past.”
