Steele Chapter Engages with Future Leaders at Howard University
September 30, 2024 | By Bob Hill
D.W. Steele Sr. Chapter Secretary Bob Hill spent the morning at Howard University on September 28, fostering partnerships with the next generation of Airmen and Guardians.
While at Howard, Hill observed the AFROTC Squadron as they engaged in training activities, including formation marching, problem-solving exercises, and an Air Force-related quiz.
This semester, 30 candidates are eager to join the Arnold Air Society, with current squadron members leading the training sessions. Notably, three candidates have expressed their intention to pursue careers in the Space Force, while the rest will join the Air Force.
During the event, Hill discussed the AFA mission and emphasized how each candidate can contribute to mission success both now and in the future. He highlighted AFA’s longstanding partnership with the Arnold Air Society, Silver Wings, and AFROTC. Several cadets expressed gratitude for the opportunity they had to attend the recent Air, Space & Cyber Conference on September 16, where they heard from Chief of Staff Gen. David Alvin, during a leadership session hosted by AFA’s Doolittle Leadership Center.
The Steele Chapter also is collaborating with the squadron to identify community service projects, including several at the Washington D.C. Veterans Administration Hospital. Cadets were invited to help plan future chapter projects and activities, and Hill encouraged them to take the lead in managing the chapter’s social media outreach.
Throughout the session, cadets posed questions about Hill’s AFROTC experiences and his involvement with the Arnold Air Society during his college years. He shared insights into the leadership opportunities, camaraderie, and teamwork that helped shape his Air Force career, offering valuable advice on how they can prepare to lead in the Air and Space Forces.
“The Air Force Core Values of ‘Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do’ will serve you well regardless of the career path you take in life,” Hill emphasized to the cadets.
Hill reminded the cadets that membership in the Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings automatically enrolls them as AFA members, fostering a strong connection to the broader Air Force and Space Force communities.
