AFA Funds New Food Pantry at Anacostia-Bolling
June 23, 2025
AFA’s D.W. Steele, Sr. Chapter obtained a $1,000 grant from AFA’s United Forces & Families (F2) program to fund the launch of a new food pantry at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) in Washington, D.C. The new facility opened June 16, 2025.
Food insecurity is a growing national issue to which military families are not immune. At JBAB, food insecurity doesn’t always mean empty cupboards, but it does mean tough decisions: balancing bills and groceries, stretching paychecks, and worrying whether there will be enough at the end of the month.
According to JBAB volunteer and Air Force spouse Megan Rowley, the issue is widespread. “Twenty percent of spouses are unemployed,” she said. “The cost of living in this area is too high for most junior enlisted families. Frequent moves make it difficult for spouses to hold steady jobs.” She also noted that the cost and limited availability of quality childcare further compound the problem for military families.
Speaking at the event, Steele Chapter Secretary Bob Hill emphasized AFA’s enduring commitment to the well-being of military families.
“One of our core mission pillars is to support Airmen, Guardians, and their loved ones,” he said. “This grant is a small token of that support—and a step toward easing the burden of food insecurity.”
“[AFA is] really making a difference,” said Col. Ryan Crowley, Commander of the 11th Wing at JBAB and a member of the Steele Chapter. “We’re grateful for the support and the impact AFA is making in the lives of our families.”
Initiatives like AFA’s F2 grant program showcase the power of collaboration between AFA national and local chapters—working together to ensure that no one who serves, or supports those who serve, goes hungry.
