AFA Congratulates Adam Whitmore, Nebraska’s Teacher of the Year

October 23, 2025

AFA members from around Nebraska visited the town of Columbus, Neb., on September 29 to present the AFA Lincoln Chapter and Nebraska State Teacher of the Year awards to Adam Whitmore, with students and school leadership attending during one of his classes.

Whitmore has dedicated 17 years to advancing STEM education as a teacher at Columbus High School and an adjunct instructor at Central Community College. Whitmore holds degrees in electronics technology, information systems, and mechatronics—along with more than 20 industry certifications—and uses those talents to bring real-world experience and a hands-on, skills-based approach to his students.

Under his leadership, the Columbus High School SkillsUSA Mechatronics team has won the Nebraska state championship for 16 consecutive years, with national first-place finishes the past two years and national second-place finishes the two years prior. His robotics teams also brought home a national championship, a runner-up finish, a programming skills award, and an honor award in March 2024.

Students in his programs can earn up to 14 college credit hours toward a mechatronics degree at Central Community College, giving them a significant advantage as they transition into engineering, technical careers, or military service.

Beyond his classroom, Whitmore is committed to growing STEM opportunities across Nebraska. He helps lead and foster the CREATE Foundation’s Open Robotics League, supporting and mentoring new coaches and students across the state, regardless of their background or experience. His focus is always on building the community up and expanding access to meaningful STEM experiences.

Whitmore also serves on the Association of Career and Technical Educators of Nebraska board, representing the Technology and Engineering Division, advocating for strong, career-connected education statewide.
