Celebrating Excellence: AFA Charleston Awards South Carolina Airmen

June 24, 2025

AFA’s Charleston Chapter hosted its annual awards ceremony in recognition of outstanding Active-duty Airmen and units from Joint Base Charleston, S.C., on April 17. The on-base ceremony also celebrated statewide achievements from AFA organizations and individual members in South Carolina.

At the chapter level, AFA Charleston recognized 12 individuals and two units from the 437th Airlift Wing and 628th Air Base Wing.

The AFA South Carolina State organization also used the event to award four state-level winners, including Charleston Chapter members and Active-duty personnel.

This year’s ceremony featured Maj. Gen. Arthur J. Rooney, Jr., USAF (Ret.)—a member of the Charleston Chapter—who delivered remarks and presented awards alongside the Chapter President, Makenzie Guerra, an Active-duty Airman at Joint Base Charleston. Rooney, an AFA Life Member since 1982 and Charleston Chapter member since 2008, has been a cornerstone of our organization. He and his wife, Helen Rooney, have served on executive councils at both the Chapter and State levels.
