AFA Presents Lester Lyles with Lifetime Achievement Award

National Harbor, Md. — The Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to the 28th Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Lester Lyles, USAF (Ret.), at the 2026 Air, Space & Cyber Conference on September 15. The prestigious award recognizes a lifetime of work in the advancement of aerospace.

Lyles’ exceptional leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to advancing America’s air and space capabilities have left an enduring impact on national security. During 35 years in the U.S. Air Force, he served in critical defense leadership roles, including Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Commander of Air Force Materiel Command, Director of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, and Commander of the Space and Missile Systems Center.

Lyles led transformative efforts in missile defense, space systems, aircraft acquisition, and logistics. As Director of BMDO, he advanced national missile defense capabilities during a period of evolving ballistic missile threats. He led more than 80,000 personnel conducting research, development, testing, acquisition, and sustainment efforts while enabling combat operations in the Middle East.

Following retirement, Lyles continued shaping aerospace and defense through industry leadership, STEM advocacy, and mentorship, leaving a legacy of innovation and service that strengthened America’s air and space capabilities.

The award was jointly presented by AFA Board Chair Kathleen Ferguson and AFA President & CEO Lt. Gen. Burt Field, USAF (Ret.).
