Air Force Dominates Warrior Games

AFA cheered on our Air Force Wounded Warriors last month at the Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games at MacDill AFB. The Air Force Team won gold in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis! Several of the AFA sponsored Airmen that received Airman for Life Travel Assistance Grants won gold in their individual sports. Brett Campfield and Chunté Gonzalez won silver and gold medals as Ultimate Champion contenders. Joshua “Smitty” Smith won gold in cycling and five silver medals in track chair racing, and Garrett Kuwada won the Heart of the Team award for Team Air Force.

In addition to the Air Force team’s success, our Wounded Airman Program hosted a successful hospitality suite at the Long Aquatic Center Warrior Games Swimming Competition for over 1,000 wounded warriors and family members. We provided a host of snacks, drinks, coffee, sweet treats from a local bakery, Chick-Fil-A chicken minis, ice cream and more! Also, the children of the wounded warriors enjoyed a decked out “under the sea” themed activities room. The room was complete with a photo booth, games, face painting, a reading station, and arts & crafts fun. Our team heard repeatedly that they could not believe the amount of support AFA provided our wounded warriors and family members. A special thank you to our strategic partner, WellCare and our AFA FL State and chapter leaders that volunteered making the event a special day to remember! Our dynamic AFA team came together and worked hard to provide an excellent level of support, the support our wounded warriors deserve, and it did not go unnoticed!

Up next is the Warrior CARE event at Scott AFB. With the growing needs, AFA is proud to continue growing our level of support to continue taking care of our Airmen. And yes, we will always take care of our own. Go Air Force!

It’s always a great time to be involved with AFA’s Wounded Airman Program. To find out more information, or how you can volunteer or assist in some way please do not hesitate to reach out to AFAWAP@afa.org.
