Family First: AFA Charleston Lends Support to Airmen in Need

January 21, 2026

The AFA Charleston Chapter in South Carolina successfully conducted its second Annual Family First Fund, a seasonal program developed by the chapter to provide direct support to lower-enlisted service members and their families throughout the holidays. In 2025, the chapter doubled the number of families assisted compared to the previous year.

Through the Family First Fund, the chapter assisted families during Thanksgiving and Christmas, distributing meal baskets, gift cards, gas cards, grocery gift cards, and other items tailored to each family’s unique circumstances. Families served ranged from infants to teenagers.

The initiative was partially funded by grant from AFA’s United Forces & Families program.

“As an Airman, I understand the unique challenges we face,” said Makenzie Guerra, President of the AFA Charleston Chapter and an Active-Duty Intelligence Analyst at Joint Base Charleston. “When the opportunity arose, I knew I wanted to give back to those serving alongside me who needed it the most. That’s how the Family First Fund came to be. From one parent and service member to another, I am so proud to serve with you and support you.”

Over a three-month period, the chapter worked closely with Warriors Havens to coordinate holiday support. The event further strengthened through contributions from community partners, including Three Pillars Community Outreach, Lowcountry CVMA 34-4, and Charleston Real Producers.

Through this effort, the AFA Charleston Chapter exemplifies its commitment to supporting Airmen and their families, ensuring that no service member goes without during the holidays.
