Honoring Our Heritage: A Moment of Gratitude

February 24, 2025

A heartwarming moment unfolded at Mission Bar-B-Q in Fredericksburg, Va., when AFA’s D.W. Steele Chapter President Lloyd Swede honored two veterans on Monday, Feb. 17. While having lunch, Swede noticed a gentleman wearing a Vietnam veteran’s cap enter the restaurant with his son, a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Recognizing the opportunity to express gratitude, Swede ran to his car and returned with a Vietnam service lapel pin. He approached the older veteran and presented the pin along with heartfelt thanks for his service. The son, visibly appreciative, also thanked Swede for recognizing his father’s sacrifice and for acknowledging the bond among those who have served, those now serving, and those who will serve in the future.

Although the names of the two remarkable men were not captured, the simple yet profound gesture highlighted the importance of remembering and honoring those who have served our country.

“So many of our older veterans came home from war and didn’t even receive a thank you,” Swede said.  “This small gesture of sharing a Vietnam Service pin and words of appreciation was the least I can do.”

AFA believes that remembering our past and preserving our heritage are central to its mission. The Steele Chapter upholds this core value through various events and programs designed to bring together Airmen, Guardians, and Veterans alike. Swede’s small but meaningful gesture exemplifies that commitment, strengthening the bonds between past, present and future service members.

The Steele Chapter continues to emphasize history and heritage. Plans are already underway for upcoming events, including a chapter gathering to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the Doolittle Raid over Japan on April 17 and participation in the Air Force Memorial History Series beginning this spring. These events are one way the Steele Chapter ensures that the legacy of those who came before us remains alive in the hearts and minds of all who serve and support the AFA mission.
