South Carolina House Speaker Recognizes AFA Chapter Leader

On August 18, Cheryl Moye, vice president of the AFA Swamp Fox Chapter of South Carolina, opened her mailbox to a surprise—a letter sent from the South Carolina House of Representatives written by its Speaker of the House recognizing Moye for her leadership.

In the letter, South Carolina House Speaker G. Murrell Smith, Jr. congratulated Moye for her selection into the Air & Space Forces Association’s Scott Van Cleef Emerging Leader Class of 2026–27. 

While the letter was unexpected, Moye said it served as a meaningful reminder that public and military service share a common foundational commitment to something greater than an individual.

“Since my return to South Carolina in 2015, Speaker Smith has been unwavering in his support of our community and the organizations serving its people,” Moye said. “I serve on numerous boards, and we worked closely with his office on budget requests, legislative priorities, and matters that directly impact our community … His commitment to service, accessibility, and the people of South Carolina is something I have personally witnessed and deeply appreciate.”

The AFA Scott Van Cleef Emerging Leader Program identifies, motivates, develops, and encourages emerging AFA field leaders to serve actively in all levels of the Association by providing hands-on experience and unique insights into how the Association operates and is governed.

The yearlong program provides professional development, networking, and leadership opportunities while allowing participants to contribute to initiatives that strengthen the Air Force and Space Force community.

For Moye, her selection represents an opportunity to build upon AFA’s work supporting veterans—addressing their present needs, connecting them with resources, recognizing their contributions, and ensuring the next generation understands the value of service.

“Through my work with the Swamp Fox Chapter, I have had the privilege of continuing to serve our military-connected community through programs supporting veterans, wounded Airmen and Guardians, military families, students, educators, and the broader community,” said Moye.
