Steele Chapter Promotes AFA, Higher Education at Anacostia-Bolling

September 19, 2025

AFA’s D.W. Steele Sr. Chapter Secretary Bob Hill represented the chapter at a Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) Education & Community Expo at the base’s event center on September 4. The career event brought together dozens of Active-duty Airmen and Guardians interested in pursuing higher education opportunities to enhance both their military careers and post-service futures.

Hill shared information on the many scholarships offered annually by AFA. Among these is the Pitsenbarger Scholarship, which honors the gallantry of SSgt/ William H. Pitsenbarger, a pararescueman posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam. Hill highlighted how these scholarships embody AFA’s mission of supporting Airmen, Guardians and their Families while promoting education as a vital pillar of service.

In addition to scholarships, Hill encouraged attendees to join AFA and take an active role in the Association’s advocacy, education, and support efforts. “When you join AFA, you connect to a community invested in your success, both in uniform and beyond,” Hill said.

“It is so important for all Guardians to continue pursuing their education, which can open up lifetime opportunities,” said attendee Sgt. Nick Ames, a Guardian assigned to the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Ames, who is working toward his degree while mentoring those under his leadership, brought several of his fellow first-term Guardians to the event.

The event demonstrated the vital role that AFA Chapters play in connecting with Airmen and Guardians at the unit level. By sharing resources, scholarships, and professional growth opportunities, the Steele Chapter continues to advance AFA’s mission of empowering today’s force while preparing them for tomorrow.

“Our chapter’s commitment to supporting the force is more than words—it’s action. Whether through scholarships, mentoring, or advocacy, we’re here to help our Airmen and Guardians achieve their goals,” said Hill.
