Caregiver Support

Just as our wounded Airmen have sacrificed a great deal for our country, so have their caregivers. These hidden heroes bring a strength to our Air Force that few will ever truly understand. The trials and challenges our caregivers face can often only be understood by other caregivers. While our caregivers sometimes suffer alone, they thrive within a community of caregivers.

AFA's Wounded Airman Program is dedicated to taking care of our Air Force Wounded Warrior caregivers who take care of so many others. When times get rough, caregivers are eligible to apply for a Wounded Airman Program grant. When an unfunded veteran warrior is selected to attend a Warrior CARE event, we also fund caregivers to attend. We help with childcare and parking for caregivers to attend important sessions on resiliency training and financial management. We find out what our caregivers need and we fill the gaps to support them in doing everything they can to take care of themselves, their families, and their Airmen.

The life of a caregiver can be lonely and isolating. We are proud to bring together groups of approximately 25 caregivers at a time for much-needed rest and relaxation activities. Wounded Airman Program Caregiver events have included everything from spa days to bowling to a lunch cruise around Washington, DC. After one Wounded Airman Program Caregiver lunch, a caregiver thanked us and said: "I haven't been able to eat out in a restaurant for more than two years."
