Swamp Fox Chapter Hosts Annual Wounded Warrior 5K in Sumter
May 12, 2026
With patriotic spirit on full display, the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) Swamp Fox Chapter #298 brought the community together on April 25, 2026, for its annual Patriots’ Wounded Warrior 5K at Patriot Park, Sumter, S.C.—an event dedicated to honoring and supporting wounded service members.
As one of the chapter’s most visible initiatives in AFA’s Support mission pillar, the 5K reflects a continued commitment to the Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program. The effort began in 2019, after the chapter responded to AFA’s national call to action. By 2023, the initiative had grown into a full-scale community event in partnership with the YMCA of Sumter and the Shaw Air Force Base Sergeants Association, establishing the now-annual 5K fundraiser.
The event has drawn more than 20 registered participant organizations and raised more than $16,000, with proceeds benefiting the Air & Space Forces Wounded Warrior Program, the Wounded Warrior Project, and Hidden Wounds of Sumter between 2024 and 2026.
This year’s race transformed Patriot Park into a vibrant red, white, and blue celebration, where spectators enjoyed themed activities such as Combat Cornhole, Kombat Kites, and Badminton Battle. Participants gathered beneath a sweeping American flag suspended by the Sumter Fire Department above the finish-line arch.
Chief Master Sgt. Cheryl Moye, USAF (Ret.), vice president of the AFA Swamp Fox Chapter, welcomed attendees and thanked sponsors for their continued generosity. Opening remarks were delivered by Swamp Fox Chapter President Col. David “Bush” Hanson, USAF (Ret.), followed by the national anthem played by Derek Burress of the WIBZ Z95.5 radio station. Master Sgt. Jarrett Parker of Shaw Air Force Base led the race, proudly carrying the American flag. Information tables showcased opportunities such as joining AFA, the armed forces, and the women’s memorial.

Runners of all ages and backgrounds participated, not only to achieve personal fitness goals, but to also honor the sacrifices of America’s wounded warriors. One highlight of the 5K course was “Windmill Row,” a scenic wooded path near the park’s water, offering both reflection and inspiration. While top finishers were recognized, every participant received a commemorative medallion, reinforcing the event’s message that all who show up in support are winners.
Organizers emphasized the growing need for continued support of wounded service members, noting that hundreds of injured military personnel require lifelong access to specialized medical care, counseling, and adaptive living resources. “Our heroes need our help now more than ever,” an organizer said, expressing gratitude for sponsors, volunteers, and participants who make the event possible.
Among those recognized was Staff Sgt. Raymond Cosom, currently deployed at Shaw Air Force Base, who made personal sacrifices to attend and support the event despite being away from his family in North Carolina. Organizers described his presence as “simply humbling,” reflecting the enduring spirit of service within the military community.
The event also welcomed participation from across South Carolina and neighboring states, including representation from the South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs.
Girls on the Run (GOTR) Columbia, led by Director Ebonee Gadson, joined the 5K for the first time, alongside students from Kingsbury Elementary School in Sumter, linking youth empowerment with support for veterans.
As young participants ran alongside service members, families, and community supporters, the collaboration created a fresh and inspiring dynamic. For many of the girls, crossing the finish line symbolized more than completing a race—it marked their participation in a cause greater than themselves, aligned with the mission of the Wounded Warrior 5K.
Organizers said the partnership represents the beginning of a broader vision to connect generations through service and shared purpose.
“The Wounded Warrior 5K is a compassionate cause dedicated to healing, unity, and community strength,” said Moye. “Our goal is to grow this beyond a single race into a communitywide, statewide, and AFA‑wide sports and activity day, while staying focused on what matters most—supporting those who have sacrificed for the nation and strengthening unity in the community.”
The AFA Swamp Fox Chapter looks forward to hosting next year’s Patriots Wounded Warrior 5K, on April 24, 2027, at 9 a.m. at Patriot Park.
