AFA’s Swamp Fox Chapter Supports Wounded Warriors through 5K

Freedom is never free.

Our wounded warriors have made immense sacrifices in service to our country. Today, they deserve our unwavering support. These brave men and women—and their families—are working to rebuild their lives. They need and deserve access to long-term specialized medical care, reliable transportation, personalized housing, and transformative programs that offer real hope and healing.

In 2019, AFA’s Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program reached out to AFA Chapters in South Carolina, requesting $1,500 to help a wounded warrior attend the Air Force Trials. While my family stepped in to provide the funding, the experience—through phone calls and shared photos—sparked lasting inspiration. It led AFA’s Swamp Fox Chapter in Sumter, S.C., to take the torch and run with it.

On April 26, 2025, the Swamp Fox Chapter partnered with the YMCA of Sumter and the Shaw Air Force Base Sergeants Association to host the inaugural Patriots’ Wounded Warrior 5K. What began as a $3,000 fundraising goal in 2023 turned into a remarkable success—raising more than $10,000 across 2024 and 2025.

The event featured remarks from retired Chief Master Sgt. Cheryl R. Moye, the chapter’s vice president of communications and event visionary, and former State Senator Jeff Zell. The Sumter High School Chorus delivered a stirring rendition of the national anthem. The entire day stood as a powerful testament to the community’s commitment.

In addition to supporting the Wounded Warrior Project and AFA’s Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program, the event proudly welcomed a new local beneficiary: Hidden Wounds, a nonprofit dedicated to building homes for wounded veterans in Sumter County. On March 17, 2025, the organization broke ground on Project Alpha for Men, with future plans to build housing for women and children as well.

Themed “Stars and Stripes,” the 5K course showcased the spirit and sound of freedom with vibrant patriotic décor along one of Sumter’s most scenic routes. The Swamp Fox Chapter’s vision—to honor and uplift wounded warriors—came to life in a moving and memorable way. Families walked or ran in unity and purpose. Children zoomed by on scooters, others played bubble battle games, and kites soared overhead. A food truck served attendees while patriotic music filled the air, mixed by a live DJ. Strollers rolled under a massive American flag hoisted high by the Sumter Fire Department.

We are deeply grateful to the many sponsors and volunteers who made this event possible. While the focus remained on our wounded warriors, we also took time to recognize some of our fastest participants. Runners from across the Total Force, local students, and general registrants received medals and prizes—including gift certificates from Fleet Feet of Augusta, bracelets from the Wounded Warrior Project and Hidden Wounds, swag bags, U.S. flags, and copies of Airman Magazine provided by the Swamp Fox Chapter.

On behalf of retired Col. David “Bush” Hanson, president of the AFA Swamp Fox Chapter, we extend sincere thanks to the Sumter-Shaw community and all who joined in support. Your dedication brings life to our motto: “Cadence for a Cause —Empowering Unity in the Community.”

Save the date! The next Patriots’ Wounded Warrior 5k is set for Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Patriot’s Park in Sumter, S.C.
